Application Design Engineer- Derby - United Kingdom

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designs new/modified signal systems in response to contract-related requirements per company standards and customer specifications under the direction of a Wayside Systems Lead or System Engineer
  • Investigates, troubleshoots, and provides recommendations in resolving complex, unique or major problems.  Collaborates within the teams in resolving problems as defined above
  • Receives mentoring from Wayside Systems Leaders and System Engineers
  • Participates in technical discussions with customers to represent/protect the company interests under the direction of a Wayside Systems Leader or System Engineer
  • Designs include electro-mechanical circuit design, relay-based and /or microprocessor-based logic, HW and SW interfaces, material selection, and equipment rack layouts
  • Interfaces with internal/external contacts to include vendors, subcontractors and prime contractors on technical matters under the direction of a Wayside Systems Leader or System Engineer
  • Assists in generating schedule, budget and product/system specifications as required
  • Assists in developing technical proposals and cost estimates as requested
  • Provides input/modifications to departmental work instructions and procedures when required
  • Maintains project related files, documents and revision control of documents under their direct control
  • Develops project related requirements for products from customer specifications for new or modified designs under the direction of a Wayside Systems Leader or System Engineer
  • Provides and develops accurate material lists for both internal and external requirements on projects
  • Troubleshoots problems identified during factory and field test offering possible technical solutions to minimize impact
  • Keeps abreast of technologies used by the company, industry to remain current and prepared for technology changes within the work environment
  • Travels to the customer site as required to perform field test and supports commissioning of systems
  • Experience in a project environment including interface with manufacturing

Experience Required:

  • Prior experience in signal engineering principles and practices Knowledge of relay, as well as microprocessor-based interlocking systems Knowledge of the application of engineering design automation tools Knowledge of software development principles, Experience working with multiple operating systems (Windows, *nix, or RTOS) Strong organizational skills  Ability to establish and maintain good customer relations 
  • B.S. Degree in Computer Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Automation Engineering with a minimum of 2 years experience in Railway Signal Engineering or relevant position
