JOB TITLE: Function Architecture Manager (also referred to as Function List Expert)
MAIN GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
- This role is accountable for leading the Functional Architect activities within R&D and support the implementation of new functions aligned to the systems engineering processes.
- The Functional Architect Manager will be the expert within the R&D department to provide technical and strategic leadership for function management, technical knowledge and guidance, to ensure achievement of business objectives and technical development.
- This role leads the Functional Architect Process and is responsible for orchestrating a logical relationship between Business objectives (incl. Process), and Technical information.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operating as the expert of function architecture across the Bentley R&D department and responsible for the integration of Bentley functional development into the systems engineering activities and development processes.
- Owns and is accountable for the function list development process. Is required to lead and coach others on the process.
- Provide expert knowledge to function owners across Bentley engineering and ensure the required tasks are delivered. Act as the function integration hub and main point of contact for coaching others.
- Lead the function architect process ensuring clear requirements are shared with Bentley functional project management across engineering and platform developers.
- Is accountable and responsible to maintain and manage the function list which is critical for project delivery.
- The function list describes all of the functions that are on a given Bentley vehicle project and defines the project scope.
- Example functions include the electric window control, steering system, Bentley bonnet mascot etc.
- The list for a Bentley project typically contains over 600 functions.
- Responsible to authorise changes to the function list and lead cross functional discussions regarding possible changes so that all of the key stakeholders are informed.
- Collect the Bentley function requirements from across R&D and share with the platform/electrical architecture developers in VW group so that the functions can be included on the base platform.
- Manage service contract resource and lead permanent resource to populate and manage the function list.
- Lead the resolution of any issues or problems arising between Bentley and the platform developer.
- Resolve any internal issues or problems of the Bentley functional architecture against project requirements.
- Influence VW group development partners to include the Bentley requirements on the platform function lists.
- Be accountable for providing the needed information to the VW group partners for the Bentley functional requirements.
- The platform function list contains all of the functions available on shared vehicle platform architecture.
- Bentley select the functions that will be used on a given project from this list and are able to add additional functions that are unique to Bentley.
- Drawing on technical expertise in the definition of functional context, behaviour and structure, including the allocation of functions within a logical structure.
- Strategic thinking to ensure that the available functions are able to deliver Bentleys strategic goals.
- Strategic planning of the function development including organisational improvements for functional teams and software tool introduction.
- Responsible for generating project KPI’s based on the information from the function list and the technical experts
- to report PEP gateway status for functional architecture at the relevant gateways to ensure project delivery to cost, time and quality.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
• Strong communication, with a commitment to building positive relationships with other functions, Group and at all levels of the business as an outward facing expert to enable an effective transfer of information.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to facilitate team work, to lead function list surgery reviews and feedback to group with information on Bentley’s projects to identify synergies.
• Proven ability of being an excellent communicator with demonstrable experience in building and facilitating relationships and managing key stakeholders.
• Extensive experience of system engineering applied in a relevant industry
• Ability to think strategically and be up to date with industry trends and innovations.
• Able to influence, motivate and lead people
• Good business awareness with the ability to make and influence strategic decisions within business context.
• Demonstrable experience of functional architecture development
• Extensive relevant experience of electrical engineering and networks such as Connected Area Network
(CAN), CAN FD, FlexRay, Media Orientated System Transport (MOST) and Local Interconnect Network(LIN).
• Experience of function orientated development at a vehicle level
• German language skills
PRACTICAL & TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
• Expert knowledge of system engineering principles
• Expert knowledge of function modelling and requirements tools such as CAMEO and AVW/DOORS
• Expert knowledge of electrical engineering, networks and electronic functions and processes
• Demonstrable concept to detailed design problem solving skills and analysis.
• Expert knowledge of the automotive industry relevant to car architecture and electronic functions.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Essential: Engineering Degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar degree (masters
or bachelor with significant work experience)
• Desirable: Chartered engineer or a member of a professional institution.
